DESIGN: NEW LINES OF THOUGHTDeborah Delany, Director of Design

Graphic design is the magic behind the message – the colors, typeface, and imagery that bring an idea to life. Today, maximizing attention and impact requires a combination of technical skill, creative insight and an eye to the latest design trends. Here are a few design opportunities I see.

Color bias
Pantone has released their color of the year: “Greenery.” A refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. Usually seen on the edges as nature’s neutral color, expect to see more of it in the starring role.

The fusion of modern and retro
Combining a sleek contemporary image with a retro typeface or color palette produces an unexpected fusion of new and old that can be very impactful.

Responsive logos
With so many different sizes, shapes and formats in the digital and mobile worlds, smart companies are developing alternative logo treatments to fit the medium rather than just shrinking the original one.

Illustrated images
In a high-tech environment, simple – almost childish – illustrations offer a way to communicate even complex messages in a less intimidating and more understandable way.
